I do all my nourishment though task reminders and alarms OR ELSE, I forget to eat.
So my timer goes off once every hour and I have 2 to 4 ounces of something protein fortified like my protein shake, soup or yogurt. In addition to that, I add sips of water throughout the day and I try very hard to make all of my liquids add up to 64 ounces.
That protein intake was sooo stressed, I'm afraid not to put protein first.
Keep an hourly or daily journal. My nutritionist has me fill out a daily intake form. I created a spreadsheet so that I can also track my medication intake, etc -- so that by the end of the day, if I haven't made my protein quota, I 'll be able to throw in a quick supplement, or add an extra 4 ounces of water in me.
I've had three operations within the last 6 months. The last thing I want is to see the inside of a hospital room, let alone an operating room, or ICU, because of something that was in my control to easily prevent.
Plus, I think my husband would give me the silent treatment if I screwed this up!
BTW: I'm 10 days post-op an open RNY. I feel fabulous, doing my hair, wearing makeup, going out, even driving, but get tired quickly. The only meds I take are Tylenol or Excedrin Extra Strength. The bloat I'm still losing keeps me asleep for no more than 3 hours at a time and I can't seem to stay in bed for more than 6 hours. My stamina to work all day I'm sure will come, eventually, with post-op recovery and loss of pounds.
