Having had both Lapband and RNY, you have to know the post-op nutrition protocol for both because they're different.
(My Lapband was on for 2 weeks after which I had to have it removed...6 months ago. I just had the RNY last Tuesday).
I did SOME research on RNY but my mind was set on Lapband and the Lapband influence was high. I know I personally needed surgical help as a tool (having reached 349) and the Lapband is what my family would support. I personally wanted the RNY to begin with but threw all my efforts in researching the Lapband procedure. I did find out however later, that many surgeons won't perform Lapband when the BMI is over 60 and/or the weight is over 300.
Absolutely do thorough research on both procedures BECAUSE there are many people who have had extremely awesome results with Lapband, as well as RNY.
BUT, if I were diabetic, I'd choose RNY, period. I've heard so many wonderful stories of the end of diabetes for 80% of RNY patients that RNY is being considered as a potential diabetes treatment (though not in the near future because only the morbidly obese fall into the acceptable reasons to perform RNY in the USA).
Be informed through research and KNOW what both post-op futures require of you. I've been on this journey for 1 1/2 years since I attended my first seminar, and although life gave me a few lemons along the road, I'm finally on day one of making lemonade.
On the road to my surgery, I've always have this in my mind, as was stuffed into me by my nutritionist: surgery is just a tool, no matter which you choose. Both require life changes to lose weight and to keep the weight off. Only you can determine why this tool is necessary for you, which one, and why or why not.
Good luck to you! ! !
