Strictures are a common problem/complication with ANY surgical proceedure where a new opening/outlet is made. Strictures are NOT just for RNY...that is basically just a term to explain that the anastimosis (area that has been cut and a new opening has been created) has begun to gain scar tissue and close instead of remaining open. They happen in various surgeries and can be a problem for some people. Strictures just happen to be the rather simple more common of all the RNY complications. There are actually two possible outlets for a stricture to happen in a person who has the RNY proceedure. So, no...it's not new, it's basically just a very generic term to define something that can happen in surgery. Does that make sense?
