I'm 56 now. So I am probably "one of the older people." I liked water aerobics when I had an instructor that silenced the chatter of some of the people who didn't seem to be taking it real seriously. I was sort of blown away when I realized I was sweating while in a pool...I'd never had that happen before. But if you have joint issues or need to start back easy regarding your exercise, I should think your water aerobics would be a great way to start. After that, I'd strongly recommend you spend the bucks to get a personal trainer to help you develop a workout routine for you...a combination of cardio and weightlifting. In fact, because my bad hip keeps me off the tredmill, I lift weights as a cardio workout, I simply do NOT rest much between lifts. AND fear not, you won't become muscle-bound, you will simply look more toned.
GO FOR IT! I wish you all the best. AND--is there someone who could be your 'work out buddy' becuase that just makes it all easier.
