She is a wonderful person who deserves to be free of this weight burden.

Current weight 320 at 6'3" goal weight probably 185 to 200

She lacks discipline in general. She refuses to excercise unless we are talking about walking around Disneyland. She continually makes poor food choices and counts on me to be the food police. She gets anxiety when the house has no snacks. She works 12-16 hours a day and gets almost every meal from a caterer buffet line or snack table. She is almost always tired and achy. She can't maintain a strict diet for more than 3 weeks...her last attempt, Medifast on and off for 2mos... If there is an opportunity to overeat then she will...especially if I'm not around to be her food conscious.
She typically eats without thinking much about it and constantly feels hungry...
thanks for any input....She has asked me to research this for her so please help
Alot of the things mentioned here pose many red flags.

#1 "She lacks discipline in general": If this is true, then by this very statement alone, the Lap-Band is NOT the choice for your friend. With the Lap-Band, you have to really be disciplined the majority of the time, at least 95% of the time, make proper food choices, you must stay with a good exercise routine and you have to be able to curb the desire to "snack".

The band is only used as a tool to curb real hunger, not head hunger and it will allow the user to get full fast and stay satiated between meals. That is all. Please note, you can cheat the band very easily. If she likes carb snacks, the band WILL NOT prevent you from eating them. You can still eat potato or corn chips, crackers, milk-shakes, ice-cream -- I mean, you name it! You can eat these, no problem...

#2: "She refuses to excercise unless...": Another problem. You STILL have to exercise to lose or maintain your weight. She might find it easy to lose at first because the portions will greatly decrease, but overall - there is no way around this. In fact, I don't know of any surgeries that you can forego this. It is a fact of life, our bodies need exercise just as much as it needs good nutrition.

#3: "She makes poor food choices": Please see the answer to #1. You can STILL make poor food choices with the band. The band will not recover her from this.

This question would be better posed between herself and a surgeon who does Lap-Bands, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I don't think a Lap-Band would help your friend very much. Not unless she really is willing to go through a major life change which includes, eating much less, staying away from snacks (most of the time), exercising on a regular basis, etc.
