When I was "dieting" a couple of years ago, an avid runner I knew told me about a website that you can map out an area and know how many miles it is. After you plan it , you can print in out.
I am lucky I live in an area that has lots of walkable streets. So if walking is your thing. The website is:
USA Track & Field, then click on the USA map "routes" and plan away.
