Paige - the Citracal chews I mentioned are calcium citrate (with Vit.D) - not carbonate: http://www.citracal.com/Product/Creamy-Bites.aspx

I think you're referring to the Viactiv chews. They are carbonate.

And for those new members - although calcium carbonate has a higher concentration of calcium, it's relatively insoluble as it requires an acidic stomach which is bypassed in us.

Calcium citrate is more soluable and it doesn't rely on gastric acid for absorption.

Also, this is an important bit of info on calcium that Beth posted a few days ago:

Quote:
Basicly the "rules" about Calcium are that it should be Calcium citrate w/ Vitamin D. The Vit. D helps with the absorption. You should wait at least an hour after taking your multivitamin if it contains iron. It should also be taken with some kind of food plus we can't absorb more than 600mg at one time so you have to divide your 1200 mg dose over two doses. I also read another article recently about making sure it is 1200mg of elemental Calcium citrate. I'll see if I can find it and post it. It had a good explaination of what to look for on the labels.
And if you follow the link that Toony posted above, it'll take you to the information on calcium and labels that Beth mentions.
