Before surgery I had the same apprehension you had. I also am a single mother of two daughters (10 and almost 12) and my biggest fear was I'd die on the table (although the likelihood was very low). I did psych myself up though by reminding myself what a more active and involved parent I could be when I was fit and healthier and how I'd participate more as I'd not be ashamed to go to the 'wave pool' in a bathing suit with my kids, etc.
My only advice for you is make sure you have a strong network on support. I did this 'on my own'. The only person who knows I had the surgery is my boyfriend. I flew to NYC myself and no one came with me.... that was a mistake, I did end up calling my bf and he flew in just two days after as I really needed that support.
My only regret is that I did not have the surgery sooner. At 42 I wonder how my life may have been different if I'd had the surgery at a younger age. Again, I am only 6 weeks out (as of this coming Thursday) and I have not had any complications.
Best of luck to you with your decision.
Kimberly
