Have you tried waking your wife up when you can't get back to sleep? Sex is an awesome cure for insomnia. You might think this is a joke or that I'm kidding but I'm not. There's a hormone called prolactin released during orgasm that produces a feeling of tiredness and a need to relax. Try it. After all, if your wife doesn't want you to take the painkillers she might be willing to help you get to sleep in other ways.
