Default Sleepless in San Diego

I'm hoping that others have had this problem - I'm two weeks out from my surgery and I still have not built my stamina up. By 5 pm i'm brain dead and I feel a bit like a zombie - i'm asleep by 9 most nights (which is very unusual for me). Then I wake up some time between 11pm and 1am and can't go back to sleep for hours. I may get a couple more hours of sleep between 3 and 6. I've been taking the prescribed pain killer to help me go back to sleep (not very effective), but then I feel very groggy and crabby in the morning. My wife doesn't want me taking it anymore and I agree with her.

I exercise in the morning with a long walk and usually get a short walk in some time in the evening. I also do various light exercises during the day so I know i'm getting enough exercise.

I tried to get some work done yesterday (all computer work) and could only handle about three hours of it before my head just started swimming. I just finished what I had to complete for work between midnight and 2 am this morning because I can't sleep again. I'm very worried that the lack of sleep will affect my recovery and make it very hard to make it through a workday when I return to work.

I know I use to satiate myself with food when I got like this at night (night binging was one of the main factors for my weight gain). This is no longer an option so I'm going to have to find productive ways to get myself to fall back asleep when I wake up.

Any suggestions? anyone else have this problem? Thanks for your help!
