So...from a newbie...wanting to learn... Just a question, if we are not going over our calories and eating bad carbs...would it be ok to eat a sugar free/fat free ice cream treat a couple of times a week as a snack?? I do not eat any other *bad* carbs mentioned above like breads and crackers. I usually just have those 40-90 Calorie fudge bars a couple of times a week...

I eat sugar free ice cream occasionally. Not as often as a couple times a week, though. More like a couple of times a month. You have to take into account the calories and the carbs and decide if it's worth it to you. You also have to make sure you're getting enough protein, and always eat your protein first before eating other things. Sometimes I buy sugar free ice cream, but what I do the most is make "protein ice cream." You can find recipes on this blog: theworldaccordingtoeggface. It's basically just a frozen protein shake.

I guess its more like a couple of times a month. With all the gall bladder problems solid foods have not really gone over too well with me so I found something that worked. The sugar free fat free is awesome for me and I do add a half off scoop of non flavored protein powder to it. Gotta get that protein in. I just figured it had no bad stats it wouldnt hurt.

I just wondered in the above posts why people mentioned no dessert or anything. I wondered if its due to triggering cravings and sorts...? I only want my snack in the evenings when i am off work and all things have calmed Its the only one of the day and I just wanted the advice from older peeps that are doing sooo well.

I think the reason many people avoid the dessert type stuff, even if it is fat free or sugar free, is because it's usually just empty calories. After surgery, you're limited in how much you can eat. You really need to make each calorie count, nutrition-wise. Also, a lot of us are rather addicted to food. Once we get started on sweets or carbs, it's hard to stop. And eating them can often increase the cravings rather than satisfy them.

Anyway, I started by cutting out the obvious no-no's (sugars and empty carbs) and the 20 came back off in a couple of months.
I just wanted to add that there was another corner that I turned at this point in my journey. Basically, I had lost a LOT of weight (close to goal) but I still was not very healthy. I was NOT getting in the nutrients that my body required in order for me to live an active lifestyle (my ultimate goal). It was at this point, with the help of my new tool, that I decided that it was time to start eating to live. It is not something that happened overnight. But eventually I found that if I concentrate on getting in the nutrients I need, that I do not have a lot a room left for the things I do not.

Truthfully, I do not count carbs, calories, or anything else these days. I am religious about my vitamins, protein (every meal), and plenty of fluids. I do still eat some empty carbs and I do not deny myself and occasional sugary treat (small). It's all about finding your balance. If I am getting in my requirements, I am feeling good, and not gaining weight (burning what eat), I do not see the point of stressing over numbers. However, I do recognize that many people feel more comfortable (in control) when they monitor their intake more closely. The trick is finding what works for you.
