Question Do You Feel Hungry A lot Also?

I don't get it...lately I have been feel hungry most of the day. I drink plenty of fluids...coffee, sugar-free drink, milk, water, gatorade, green-tea lemonade...and yes even the occassional diet soda . I know I said I wasn't ever going to touch the soda but I did .
Anyway, that's a whole 'nother thread.

I'm just so mad at myself for feeling hungry (what seems like) all day! I certainly don't want to gain any weight back and I know that snacking will only lead me up that road again. I have been running on the treadmill 2-3 times a week, 2 miles. What gives?
Anyone else 2 years and + months experiencing this? Any suggestions?

I find that I feel hungry a lot now too. But I also notice that if I eat more carbs I feel MORE hungry more often. Whenever I am good and choose protein over carbs I do much better.

My problem is I still CRAVE carbs and since I don't dump I have to rely on my willpower which has never been great.

But I do believe that protein is the answer AND not drinking too soon after eating.

Yeup, me too.
It's strange though because some days I'll have a craving for something but I just don't know for what? Maybe it *is* those darn carbs.

Eli, carbs could be the culprit but also for patients further out there is the possibility that your connection between your pouch and intestines has stretched a bit. Do you still feel full when you do eat? Or don't you feel fullness at all anymore?

Well, you know I have been noticing lately that I don't get fullness feeling like I used to. When I'm sitting and eating I feel like I can eat more than before...example...half a sandwich & a cup of soup, before I could only have either or and be full but not both. I had both the other day and it was only when I stood up that I felt the full feeling.

It's kinda scary to think that anything has been stretched. It sorta gives me a panicky feeling because like I mentioned before my will power is way low. Oh-no what am I going to do?

I didn't mean to make you panic, Eli. But it is something that people need to be aware of. It can happen. Even if we have always followed the pouch rules, it is something that can happen. Exactly why things like the Stomafyx, the ROSE procedure and Sclerotherapy have been developed to help those whose connection has stretched.

If the possibility is a real concern for you, the best thing to do would be to discuss it with your surgeon. A scope would be able to tell you if that is the problem.

But since you do admit that carbs are once again becoming a problem I would make sure that you get back to basics. Maybe try the 5-day pouch test to see how it makes you feel. Get rid of the carbs, start recording what you are eating. Make sure you are following the pouch rules. Go ahead and try water loading before a meal and see if it helps.

Over time our pouch does get a bit larger. It's a muscle and with use that muscle gets some bigger. So the fact that you can eat a bit more isn't all that concerning. It's something that you have to watch. Make sure you continue to eat the correct things. The changes that we have made over the past 2 years have to go with us for life. This isn't a change just until we get to our goal weights...this is a life-long change.

...maintanence isn't easy. It gets harder the further out we get. Basicly what this surgery has done for us, is to put us on a level playing field with others of normal weight. It's always going to be work.

Default How is thw hunger going?

Hi Elisa
I was curious to see how your hunger is going. I am waiting for surgery date and have been reading the 2, 3 and 4 year post-op boards to get an idea of what life might be like in the future. I read an article on msn the other day that really scared me. The article talks about post-op complications and how the Grehlin Hormone production really cranks up again as early as 8 months out.
Here is the link: The miracle weight loss that isn’t - Diet and nutrition - MSNBC.com The article has not diswaded me from having the surgery, but I am concerned about life beyond the honeymoon period. Please let me know how you are progressing/dealing with your hunger. Perhaps there are other long-term post-ops that could also share their strategies for hunger management. Thanks, Hugh.

Well Hugh, I still "feel" hungry a lot but I think it's all in my head. Early post-op we all begin to learn how to distinguish head hunger from real hunger and I have been forgetting to do this. I've learned that there are so many ways to stop from snacking and eating when I'm not really hungry. I should put these strategies to use but I forget sometimes. I guess it's all about discipline...how disciplined do you think you'll be with yourself?

I have not gained weight...my weight goes down 3 pounds then up 3 but my average weight is 155, which is not bad. It's only 5 pounds from my goal weight. I can live with that . In addition I have been consistently running on the treadmill about 1.5 to 3 miles for 2-3 times a week....so not bad huh? Exercise helps a lot too. So, I think the weight gain is prone to those who just let themselves go again. I'm not going to lie...it's a still a struggle to maintain but it's not as hard as it was before.
