1) If you aren't already, make sure you switch to going backwards every five to seven minutes, and go backward for at least two minutes before switching again. I listen to music while I'm "running" on the elliptical, and I just switch every song.

2) Change your upper body posture, as well, lean forward, lean back.

3) "Run" on your toes for a while, then switch back.

4) "Run" flat-footed, but lift the heel of the leg that's uppermost on each stride for a while, so you're stretching the arch and ball of the foot. Sounds funny, but easy to do. I just basically use it as kind of a dance step to whatever music I'm doing.
I got my elliptical about 6 weeks ago, and have worked up to a 40 minute workout. The treadmill was too rough on my knees and I just wasn't pushing myself hard enough on videos. But I too, have the balls of my feet go numb about half way thru my work out. I thought it was my shoes, so I went out and got new ones, but its still happening. I will try your suggestions tonight when I workout and see what happens.

Since I got my elliptical I have gone from working out once or twice a week, to working out 5-6 days a week. When I first got on it I could only do 7 minutes and in 6 weeks I have worked my way up to a 40 minute workout where I'm actually pushing myself. Its probably the greatest investment in myhealth that I've made since surgery.
