check around - conquer yourself first.
My gym is heaven and was the first time I walked in. I walked in there at 288 and felt like the trainers were so happy to see me. I feel like they're happy to see me every day! When I miss a day, they always ask if I was ill, if I'm okay etc. Now there are two other gyms in town that are not heaven - I tried those and left. The grunting coming out of the weight room was quite a turn-off. (as was the smell)
Most gyms will give you a trial period for free and usually at least an orientation session or a couple personal training sessions. My gym offers a 21 day free trial and two personal training sessions.
Check for classes that are available etc.
Then go in - tell whoever you're talking to that you're about to lose 100 or so pounds and you need a supportive environment in which to do it. See what their reaction is.
But honestly, this is like the "You don't conquer the mountain, you conquer yourself" proverb. If you can manage to feel proud that you are "doing it" and not feel like your out of place, you will be seen as a person determined to succeed.
I now look like one of those in-shape people who others might feel are judging them, but of course I'm not that at all. I see very overweight folks come into the gym and I think, "Boy are you doing the right thing! You're going to love it here!"
So check out a few and chose the best. Then - go every day and you will become one of the regulars. In a few months people will come up to you and tell you how great you are doing. Happens to me all the time.
