I asked that
I asked my surgeon why he didn't require a liquid diet before surgery and he said that no food before midnight pretty much takes care of cleaning out what he's working on. I suspect that because he is chief of trauma surgery - especially abdominal cases - most of his patients are not "cleaned out" before he starts so his bariatric patients look pretty good.
As to drains, he said they are only really necessary if there is a problem, everyone hates them and because he's had so few problems, he just doesn't use them. Says there are other ways to deal with those problems if they come up.
They all do what makes them comfortable. That is a good thing. we want happy people cutting us open.
