For some, food may always be difficult, but if you are getting in 40g with real food now, then you should be able to get in more quite easily. Start with good quality protein sources and eat those first. What kinds of quantity are you having at one sitting. Aim for 15-20g of protein at each of the 3 meals, then add in other items such as veggie/fruit. I aim for 40g of protein a day from real food, which sounds like what you are doing. The extra protein I get is from drinks, bars or hidden foods ie: tomato products, wraps and such also have protein.
I would say, unless you are working out a lot getting in 40g is not that bad. I wouldnt' go lower than this, but I think you are doing pretty good with the protein!
