Default Sushi?

At what point were most of you able to eat sushi rolls? I have been getting them for about 2 weeks now, I just eat the insides and discard the rice. I asked for a rice-less roll and the sushi chef looked at me like I had a third eye or something. It's easier to just order the roll and pick the insides out! I thought about ordering sashimi, but I like the veggies and cream cheese. A philly roll is my favorite. I've read that some people eat the brown rice and that some order their rolls without rice. At what point could you eat the brown rice? Right now, I can have 2 oz. of protein and 1 oz. veggies or fruit. When I get my roll, I have been eating the insides of all but one of the pieces. I eat the last piece whole if I still have room. So far *knock on wood* the rice from one piece hasn't caused any trouble. Any sushi fans out there have any suggestions on how to order? I'm not really up on all the terminology so I don't know what the different things are called, but I got a sushi dish in Earth Fare that has pieces of fish over a little clump of rice. Those are easy to eat, but there's no veggies. I like the cucumber and avocado, especially the avocado! With the fish just on the rice, you don't get that like you do in a roll. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
