went to the dietitian today

found out i am not eating enough, was told that i should be eating 1/2 cup of food at a time three-six times per day --what!!!??

i am eating two tablespoons - 1/4 cup two-three times a day, depending on how i handle it, but am managing 40-50 grams of protein usually, but calories can be 400-600 - but the protein intake is good for that low of calories, at least thats what i think

i was told i should be having 600-800 calories at this point, most days i am at that, i was told 60 grams of protein, and was told 30 mins before and after meals for liquidls, to eat very slowly and take at least 30 minutes to eat or drink a portion of 1/2 cup, told that if i begin to feel full or have pain, stop eating right away...wait for the pain to go away before starting to eat again, but to make sure i do finish that 1/2 cup portion -this i was not doing, once i felt full i would stop and then i would drink after 30 minutes and up until 30 minutes before my next meal, i was told to drink 1 1/2 - 2 litres or water of low-energy fluids such as skim milk, weak tea, broth, or decafe coffee.

Was told for constipation to take 60ml of Fruitlax or pureed prunes or purne juice - here is the recipe for the Fruitlax: 2 /14 cup seedless raisins, 1 cup pitted prunes, 2 1/4 cup pitted dates, 1 cup orange juice (unsweetened), 1 cup prune juice 1. Heat prune and orange juice to boiling 2. soak prunes, raisins and chopped dates over night (12) hours in the orange and prune juice. 3. Drain and reserve juice from soaked fruit. 4. Put drained fruit through grinder or blender (to consistency of thick jam) 5. Mix thoroughly with reserved prune or orange juice 7. Store in refrigerator, or freeze for future use. 8. Yields approximately 1 1/2 litres (6cups) Recommended Dose: 15-60ml (1-4 Tbsp) daily as required.

I am also going to post a few other recipes that i was given on the nutrition/recipe threads, they are recipes for high protein food choices

I know i am rambling, but i am going to post one more thing, a typical menu for a days meals and time that was given to me out of the Eating Well after Bariatric Surgery Guide from the Edmonton Dieticians for people 8 weeks and more post op

Morning 730-800Am 1/2 cup unsweetened juice
Breakfast 830-900AM 1 piece whole grain toast - 1tsp margarine
1 boiled egg
930-1000AM 1 cup milk
Snack 1030-1100AM 1 cup fruit or 1 medium piece
1130AM-Noon 1 cup water
Lunch 1230-100pm 1/2 tuna sandwich (1piece whole grain toast, 1/2 cup tuna, 2 tsp low fat mayonnaise or mustard or cottage cheese
2 tomato slices
1/4 cup raw vegetables
130-200pm 1 cup water
Snack 300-330pm 4 melba toast or 6 whole wheat crackers
1 oz cheddar cheese
1/2 cup carrot sticks
400-430pm 1 cup water
430-500pm 1 cup milk
Supper 630-700pm 1/2 cup pasta
1/4 cup tomato sauce with mixed vegetables
2oz chicken breast or 1/2 cup cottage cheese
730-800pm 1 cup water
830-900pm 3 graham crackers
1 tbsp peanut butter
3/4 cup yogurt
930-1000pm 1 cup water

wow that is so much food for one day, i cant even phathom that right now, i dont agree with eating after 7pm, so i will omit the last snack once i can eat that much or move it to the morning as i get up much earlier than this plan starts, but this is a good guide for someone that can eat this way or at least a goal to work towards, this is only an example to give ideas for meals and snacks and portion size and meal pattern, you will need to change this meal pattern and food choices to make it work for you, but i thought it was a nice suggestion and a good visual so i thought i would share it. This sample day provides 65 grams of protein, 5 servings of grain products, 5 1/2 servings fo vegetables and fruit, 3 1/2 servings of milk products, 3 servings of meat and alternatives and 7 1/2 cups of fluid.......i hope to be able to follow this as much as possible one day soon.
